ECT in England 1979-1991

Between 1979 and 1991 the Department of Health collected and published annual statistics on the use of electroconvulsive treatment (ECT) in England. Here they are:

1979   160,005 treatments = 24,428 courses*

1980  160,227 treatments = 25,441 courses

1981  147, 419 treatments = 24, 407 courses

1982  139, 307 treatments = 22,578 courses

1983  128, 526 treatments = 21,350 courses

1984  125, 357 treatments = 19,850 courses

1985 137,940 treatments

1986  129, 757 treatments

1987/1988  117,305 treatments

1988/1990  105,792 treatments

1990/1991  105,466 treatments

*The total number of  people undergoing ECT in any given year is slightly less than the number of courses as a few people have more than one course in a year.
